Jose Mourinho has admitted to calling former Chelsea doctor Eva Carneiro a “son of a b****”, but insisted the foul language was not meant as sexual discrimination. Mourinho had to testify in Carneiro’s case against Chelsea and the Portuguese tactician , and admitted he shouted “filho da puta”, which translates to “son of a b**** or whore”, during the game in question. “‘Filho da puta’ is a phrase I often use, all of the players know it. There is no sexist connotation in the use of the phrase – it is just like saying ‘f*** off’,” Mourinho said, as quoted by the Daily Mirror. “In the world of football, a lot of swear words are used.” The incident in question took place during Chelsea’s 2015/16 season opener against Swansea, when Carneiro rushed on to the field to check on Eden Hazard and subsequently treated him off the pitch. The Blues, who were already down to 10 men at the time, were left with just nine players on the pitch for a few minutes, which annoyed Mourinho, and the 53-year-old slammed the former club doctor as a consequence. Carneiro’s barrister, Mary O’Rourke QC, insisted that: “He uses the word ‘filha’ because he is abusing a woman.” Meanwhile, ESPN have reported that Chelsea and Mourinho deny treating Carneiro “unlawfully in any way”. They instead insist that she adopted a “provocative approach” towards attempts at reconciliation with Mourinho, and “indicated a willingness to remain at Chelsea only if her wholly unrealistic and extravagant financial (and other) demands were met”.
