That awkward moment when a Patient disappeared from Ogun hospital

01:26:00 0

The family members of a 40-year-old woman, Mrs. Ajarat Muritala, who was on admission at the Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital, Sagamu, Ogun State, have blamed her disappearance from the hospital’s female ward on the negligence of the nurses.

They also lamented that police investigation into her disappearance was at snail pace, saying no progress had been made in finding the woman since she went missing on October 12.
About six nurses were reportedly with the woman and other patients in the ward before she was discovered missing.
PUNCH Metro learnt that Ajarat was receiving treatment on a heart related disease at the OOUTH.
The mother of four children was said to have gone into a coma on October 11 and was admitted to the emergency and accident ward of the hospital.
Our correspondent gathered that she was later taken to the female ward, where she went missing after regaining consciousness.
Her husband, Mr. Muftau Muritala, said the hospital management had not shown concern for her whereabouts.
He said, “She was supposed to go for treatment at the hospital on October 19. But on October 11, her condition got worse. We rushed her to the hospital and I was told to pay N10,000 admission fee, which I did.
“She was placed on oxygen all through that day. In the evening, I went to pay for a scan she was to have the following day. At about 10am the next day, some nurses wheeled her into the X-ray centre for a scan.
“She was taken to the female ward after the scan. A doctor came to attend to her and she was served a meal. After she finished eating, she said she wanted to rest. Her elder sister, my second wife and my mother, were with her in the ward. They were later told to go outside.
“I went into the ward around 12pm to check her but she was not on her sick bed. There were about six nurses in that ward. They told me to check her in the toilet.
“My relatives outside joined me and we searched everywhere but we couldn’t find her. We rushed to the gate to inform the security men and they said they didn’t see any patient. Meanwhile, the nurses didn’t help us to search for her until they handed over to their colleagues on afternoon duty.”
PUNCH Metro learnt that the incident was reported at the Sagamu Police Division around 3pm and the chief security officer of the hospital and the nurses on duty were quizzed by the police.
The Chief Medical Director of the hospital was said to have begged for the release of the suspects, allegedly promising to find the patient within 24 hours. He, however, did not produce the victim within the period.
“Probably, the police are not handling the case with due diligence because the hospital is owned by the state government. They keep on telling me the case is under investigation. The nurses are supposed to be detained,” the husband added.
Ajarat’s elder sister, Mrs. Khadijat Abdullahi, said she could not fathom the circumstances leading to her disappearance.
Muftau’s brother, Taofiq Muritala, a lawyer, said his chamber had petitioned the Ogun State Commissioner of Police, Ahmed Iliyasu, to thoroughly investigate the case.
He said, “We urge the police to investigate this issue of mysterious and sudden disappearance of the patient at a government’s hospital. The nurses on the instruction of the CMD, have since assumed their duties, leaving the search in the hands of the family alone. This raises our suspicion that there is more to this issue than meets the eye.”
The CMD, Prof. Alfred Jaiyesimi, in a text message to our correspondent, said he was not authorised to speak on the case.
“As a public officer, I am precluded from expressing opinions or statements to the press or media. Kindly respect this public service rule,” he said.
Calls made to the line of the Ogun State Commissioner for Health, Babatunde Ipaye, rang out.
He had also yet to reply to a text message sent to him on the incident as of press time.
But the state Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Abimbola Oyeyemi, said, “The State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department has taken over the case.
“The SCIID wrote the hospital to release those nurses on duty for investigation. We are still investigating the matter.”

Chilling story of how a Woman was bathed with acid after accepting married lover’s proposal

01:24:00 0

A 25-year-old woman, Ogochukwu Nwosu, is in a critical condition at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital, Idi-Araba, Surulere, Lagos State, after she was bathed with substance suspected to be acid.
It was learnt that Ogochukwu was at Ilasa bus stop, on the Oshodi-Apapa Expressway, when a man allegedly dropped from a motorcycle and poured acid on her.He was said to have jumped back on the motorcycle and fled the scene.
The victim, who sustained burns on her face, neck, breasts, among other parts of her body, was reportedly rushed to LUTH by passersby.
Ogochukwu, who spoke with a PUNCH Metro correspondent from her hospital bed, accused one Mrs. Chidi, the wife of the man who had proposed marriage to her, as the culprit. She alleged that Mrs. Chidi had been threatening her on the telephone and through text messages immediately she learnt of her husband’s intention to marry her (Ogochukwu).
She said she had turned down Mr. Chidi’s proposal because he was married, adding that the latter persisted.
“On Thursday, I had closed from Computer Village where I work. Around 8pm, when I reached Ilasa bus stop, I dropped off the bus.
“I was about to cross to the other side of the road when a man dropped from a motorcycle and poured something on me. He immediately fled on the motorcycle. People came to my rescue and took me to the hospital.
“I suspect Mrs. Chidi because she had been threatening me before the incident. And while I was on admission at the hospital, she called and spoke with my brother, saying that was just the beginning,” she added.
Ogochukwu’s brother, Peter, said he recorded a part of the conversation with Mrs. Chidi on his mobile phone.
Peter said he reported the incident at the Itire Police Division, adding that Mrs. Chidi was arrested and detained for two days before the case was transferred to the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department, Yaba.
It was gathered that the police admitted the suspect to bail shortly after the matter got to the SCIID.
PUNCH Metro learnt that counsel to the victim, Louis Nwaugbala and Anthony Obi, had already petitioned the Deputy Inspector General of Police, Force Headquarters, Abuja, over the matter.
A copy of the petition, obtained by our correspondent, read in part,
“Sometime in 2012, one Mr. Chidi approached our client and started making advances to her and promised to marry her. But she vehemently refused the proposal. She told him that she was not interested in the marriage since he was already married.
“Upon Mr. Chidi’s insistence of wanting to marry our client and even making preparations to visit our client’s family to formalise the marriage rites, our client advised Mr. Chidi to inform his wife of his plans to take our client as his second wife, since both of them will be cohabiting in the same house.
“Immediately Mr. Chidi made his plans known to his wife, all hell broke loose as Mrs. Chidi started calling and persistently threatening our client’s life through phone calls, text and Whatsapp messages.”
The petition alleged that the suspect threatened to wreak havoc before December 2016, the purported month of the traditional marriage between Mr. Chidi and Ogochukwu.
It added that Ogochukwu was persuaded against reporting the threat to the police by Mr. Chidi, who allegedly promised to persuade his wife to accept the union.
It said tragedy struck when the victim was attacked while she was returning from work on Thursday, October 6, 2016.
Nwaugbala, the victim’s lawyer, said justice must be served in the case, adding that Ogochukwu must be flown abroad for plastic surgery by the suspect and her husband.
“That is the only thing that can assuage the damage presently done to her. She should be flown abroad for treatment,” he added.
When contacted, Mr. Chidi declined comment. He said,
“I cannot speak with you, neither can my wife. The case is under investigation at the SCIID. Go and speak with the police at Panti; they are the ones investigating it. We cannot make any comment.”
The Police Public Relations Officer, SP Dolapo Badmos, confirmed the incident.
She explained that Mrs. Chidi was released on bail because she could not be directly linked to the attack.
She said, “It was reported that the victim was bathed with acid by two men on a motorcycle. The victim alleged that she suspected the woman because she (the victim) is a girlfriend to Mr. Chidi and because she (victim) might likely marry the man, Mrs. Chidi might have planned the attack.
“Mrs. Chidi was picked up, made to undergo investigation and the command could not get any clue linking her to the case for now. And to protect her right, she was granted bail. Investigation is still ongoing to unravel what actually happened. Anyone linked to the case will be duly prosecuted.”

How a final year TASUED student was hacked to death over girlfriend

01:16:00 0

Hoodlums, suspected to be cult members, on Saturday unleashed mayhem in the Ijagun, Ijebu Ode area of Ogun State, during which they killed a final-year student of the Tai Solarin University of Education, Ijagun.

PUNCH Metro reports that the cult members, who were armed with cutlasses and guns, at about 12pm invaded Abapawa – an area off the campus – and chased students, during which the victim, Ganiyu Oloyede, was hacked to death.

Oloyede was said to be a 400-level student of Social Studies in TASUED.

It was learnt that Oloyede was hacked to death by the cult members because his girlfriend, whose
name could not yet be ascertained, was beaten up by one of the cult members, and the victim had reportedly challenged the assault.

It was said that the cult members later mobilised to the hostel where Oloyede, who was preparing for his teaching practice stayed and killed him.

Punch adds that there was tension in Abapapawa, as students shut themselves in, while the cult attack persisted.

Policemen from the Obalende division later arrived at the scene to remove Oloyede’s corpse to a mortuary.

A female student and eyewitness, who gave her name only as Bisola, said Oloyede, aka Agunrege, was killed as a result of the cult clash between Aye and Aloera confraternities.

She said,
“The crisis started at about 12pm in Abapawa in Ijagun. The area has several students’ hostels. I saw the boys running around with cutlasses. They were later said to be Aye and Aloera cult members.
“They chased Ganiyu (Oloyede) to a corner and cut him with cutlasses until he died. What started the fight was that Ganiyu had a girlfriend who was beaten up few days ago by one of the cult members. The cult member was said to be interested in the lady.
“Ganiyu had protested the beating of his girlfriend by the cult member and the culprit went to invite his friends, who attacked Ganiyu. Students are still in fear because the cult members are threatening to unleash more mayhem.”
Another student, who did not want his name in print, said the cult members came on a reprisal to attack a rival cult member, but Ganiyu was the one they met in the hostel.

He said,
“On getting to Ganiyu’s hostel, the cult members did not meet the person they came to attack. When they saw Ganiyu, one of them recalled that he had had an issue with him (Ganiyu) over a girlfriend. So, they vented their anger on him.
“Right now, Ijagun is hot and the soldiers who came to restore normalcy are only arresting and harassing innocent students. The cult members have all gone into hiding after the killing. We want the police to intensify their patrol around the campus. We want our peace to be restored.”
Punch gathered that Oloyede’s corpse had been deposited by the police in a morgue in Ijebu Ode for an autopsy.

The Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer, Abimbola Oyeyemi, confirmed the killing.

He said,
“There was a clash between members of the Aye and Aloera cults in an area around the university.
“When the policemen got to the scene, the deceased, a 400-level student, was found dead with machete cuts. The body has been deposited in a morgue for an autopsy. Normalcy has been restored to the area now. Meanwhile, effort is on to arrest the fleeing suspects.”
The Public Relations Officer, TASUED, Nureni Bakenne, said the deceased student was supposed to undergo a teaching practice.
“The school, through its chief security officer, has  put in place several security measures to prevent a recurrence.
“Our school has not witnessed a cult clash in a long time,” he added

Eme, who was brought to the Lagos State Police Command headquarters, Ikeja, on Thursday, informed Punch that she dumped her day-old youngster due to the fact that her lover deserted her, adding that she had no manner of taking care of the baby.

It was once gathered that 31-yr-historical Eme met her lover, recognized most effective as John, who worked as a contract employee with a enterprise within the subject, in March 2015.

It used to be learnt that Eme, who lived along with her elder sister in Ajangbadi, advised John early 2016 that she was pregnant.

John ended the relationship, fled the area and switched off his mobile cellphone. It used to be mentioned that Eme used to be delivered of the child girl on Monday in her house and wrapped her in a polythene bag.

She allegedly sneaked out of the residence and went out to dump the polythene bag by means of the roadside round 1am on Tuesday.

“after I found out that I was once pregnant early this 12 months, I referred to as John and he mentioned he used to be touring and he used to be not ready to maintain any youngster. Seeing that then, he had now not come to look me, and his cell mobile number had been switched off.

“I used to be delivered of the child at home on Monday considering that I might no longer manage to pay for health facility bill. I'm an orphan. So, when John left me, i didn't have mum and dad that I would provide the baby to. I accordingly made up our minds to dump her by means of the roadside the place variety-hearted folks could decide on her up.

“When some neighbours discovered her, they said at the police station and the baby was once traced to me. It was once poverty that forced me to abandon the girl by way of the roadside.”

Chickens now pressured to skip feeding by way of chicken house owners as price of feed rises through a hundred%

02:41:00 0

The latest expand within the fee of chicken feed in Nigeria has been forcing chook farmers to ration food for his or her birds.

Findings have shown that the cost of constituents for the composition of chook feeds, especially maize, has increased by using 100 percent.

For example, a 100kg bag of maize, which used to price about N6,000 in April 2016, is now being offered for about N12,000.

Additionally the cost of fish meal, one other major ingredient in chook feeds, has elevated by means of 60 percentage. A kilogramme of fish meal that used to sell for N500 now bills about N800.

Nonetheless, the cost of egg in the market has not loved an identical develop.

Earlier than the hike in the cost of chicken feed parts, a crate of eggs used to sell for N600. It is now being sold for between N650 and N700, relying on the egg measurement.

This development has led farmers to be rationing meals for their birds or mixing their feeds with lesser nutritious components.

This has as a result resulted in a drop in egg production as malnourished birds do not produce eggs maximally.

Findings also showed that the high price of maize was as a result of low cultivation therefore of the activities of Boko Haram insurgents in the north, ordinary assaults via Fulani herdsmen and flooding.

This obstacle was tested within the 2016 Maize Outlook by means of a consulting corporation, Novus Agro Nigeria.

In line with the outlook, the fee of maize hit N65, 000 per metric tonne in January 2016, up from around N45,000 in October 2015 and has been on steady upward push considering the fact that then.

The Director-common of the poultry organization of Nigeria, Mr. Onallo Akpa, mentioned the chicken enterprise in the nation was once in challenge.

He mentioned, “last yr, Nigeria produced over 14 billion table eggs and was acknowledged because the number one egg producer in Africa. But we have not been competent to calculate the construction figure in the final one yr considering the fact that of the crisis we're going through. However definitely, our egg construction determine has dropped. The enterprise is being threatened now due to excessive cost of poultry feeds.

Akpa also said the problem arose hence of overlook of the agricultural sector and the non-supply of inputs like fertiliser to the “few” farmers within the nation.

He mentioned, “Maize was being bought between N4,500 and N5,000 per 100kg bag in October/November 2015. But now, it is about N12,000. Now there may be pressure on maize with the aid of the poultry enterprise which consumes over 2.5 million metric tonnes annually. The breweries and other industries additionally compete with us.”

The Chairman of Dedora Nigeria constrained, Lagos, Mr. Emmanuel Omokwale, said his farm had been recording loss day-to-day.

He lamented that before, his farm used to provide 300,000 crates of eggs per day, however would hardly produce 1,000 crates now when you consider that of the rise within the prices of raw materials.

He stated, “the costs of uncooked substances hold on growing every day. Maize is a main illustration. I have been in this business for over 25 years, i've now not purchased maize above N80, 000 per tonne. But the rate is now N180,000 per tonne. With the best way it is going, simplest God is aware of when it'll end.

“different obstacle is non-availability of nutrients and others that are used to produce amino acid to complement chook feed. All these matters are not produced in Nigeria. Maize and soya beans are in the neighborhood produced, but soya beans are in many instances imported into the country. The currency exchange challenge has compounded the non-availability of vitamins.”

Omokwale delivered that the currency trading concern, increase in gasoline rate and high curiosity rate have additionally contributed to the drawback the poultry industry is going through.

“we are not breaking even since we cannot meet the cost of feeding the birds. In my farm, I provide water, electrical energy, labour and protection. For illustration, i purchase diesel at N200 per litre and i take advantage of a minimum of 200 litres of diesel per day, that is, N40,000 on diesel alone everyday,” he said.

Omokwale delivered that these problems had ended in a pointy decline in the creation of eggs on his farm.

He said, “we can’t meet demand for eggs on account that we don’t have ample birds. We don’t have the potential to stock now. The main issue is that the more we produce, the extra we lose. We can't just develop on account that to feed the birds by myself is complex.

“Some chicken farms ration the feeding of their birds. However the trouble with that's that in case you undertake that process, you will be worse off. Because of this you have to lessen your stock. It's too highly-priced to stock now. Everyone will quickly see the influence of what's going down now in the country.”

The Managing Director of Abibcom Farms in Ogun State, Dr. Habib Stephen Temitope, additionally mentioned insecurity had contributed to the non-availability of uncooked materials for chicken feed.

He mentioned, “How do you feed your birds when the fee of raw materials is growing every day? The excellent factor is to lower your stocking potential. A kilogramme of maize rate N44 earlier than, however it is being offered for N105. So, if you are shopping one hundred kilogrammes of maize, you want N105,000 to do so in contrast to before when it price N44,000.

“but regardless of the upward push within the price of raw substances, poultry farmers cannot broaden the fee of eggs. Vaccine is another predicament. You are to vaccinate your birds. Some farmers are rationing food for his or her birds simply to keep them alive when you consider that of these problems.”

according to Punch, a chicken farmer in Ibadan, who has about 2,000 birds, Isaac Oguntuase, said he had began rationing feeds for his birds seeing that of its fee implication and the fiscal problem he was once going by means of.

He explained that the sufficient number of chicken feeds required daily for his birds is 250kg as each and every consumes an common of a hundred twenty five grammes of food per day.

He stated, “i will be able to inform you that the rate of poultry feed has multiplied with the aid of 100 per cent. My birds have no longer been consuming as they should; alternatively of giving them 250 kg of feed everyday, i have reduced the ration to about 200kg.

“however the hindrance with that's that their egg creation has dropped by using 30 per cent already. If birds don’t devour well, they won’t produce eggs as they must and the little they produce might also be small in size.”

additionally a chicken farmer in Ogun State, Mr. Johnson Anwuzie, mentioned he had been substituting maize with dried garri (koko) and fish meal with soya beans.

But he famous that the move had decreased his birds’ egg creation rate. Rather of an average of a hundred and eighty crates of eggs everyday, Anwuzie has been getting not up to 140 crates due to the fact he started adulterating feed for his birds.

“i've been losing some huge cash considering the fact that of the high price of maize and its unavailability,” he stated.

A chook farmer in Ogbomoso, Oyo State, Mr. Oladapo John, stated he had diminished the inventory of fowls on his farm.

He mentioned, “instead of adulterating their feed, i've lowered the stock of fowls on my farm. However in contrast to before after I used to provide a hundred egg crates on my farm, I only produce 30 now.”

A chicken farmer, Mr. Azeez Gbolahan, described the rising cost of feeds as demanding, pronouncing the development has had enormous influence on his trade.

Gbolahan, who rears layers and cockerels, lamented that in spite of the growing fee of the feeds, any try and expand the rate of their products would result in loss of consumers.

“the costs have skyrocketed. It's killing the business and consuming into our profit. For illustration, on the opening of the year, a bag of layers mash was round N2,200, but now it’s N2,900. It used to be about N2,650 simply three weeks ago, however now it has elevated once more.

“Painfully, you could’t simply broaden the costs of your merchandise like that, else you are going to lose buyers. I attempted it. I raised rate of a crate of eggs from N700 to N750, however I misplaced numerous consumers thus," he said.

Findings with the aid of Punch also confirmed that many poultry farmers are relocating out of the business because it has turn out to be complicated to preserve their farms beneath the current instances.
